Participating in the DofE award will require students to have particular equipment for use in the expedition section. Purchasing this can be quite expensive and I would suggest if the award participant is keen to proceed to Silver/Gold award levels that they have their own equipment, otherwise it may be useful to buy only particular items and add to their kit over time. At present the school can loan out boots, rucksacks, sleeping bags, survival bags, tents, midge hoods, emergency whistles, compasses, waterproof trousers and headtorches. There is only a small amount of equipment for loan at the moment and we hope to expand this in the future.
The following is taken from the mandatory kit list provided by Renfrewshire Council and we must adhere to it;
“After consultation, it has been decided to implement the following rules for participants going out on either day walks or expeditions.
The rules will apply to everyone going out on organised DofE trips within Renfrewshire Council at any time of the year, leaders must ensure that all of the equipment is being carried at all times. Where a participant turns up for an event without an item they should be given the chance to get it, if this is not possible they are not to be allowed out.
ITEMS-(items in italics will be supplied by the school). We can supply some other such as waterproof trousers but participants must bring a watch, notepad and pen/pencil, food, medication and items such as sun cream, sun hat when required.
Waterproof Jacket with hood Waterproof Trousers A watch Wooly hat and gloves Whistle Torch Spare batteries Notebook and pen/pencil Spare fleece/jumper Survival bag Emergency food Individual First Aid kit Medication if required
From 1st May to 30th September, the following items must also be included
Sun protection cream Midge repellant Midge hood (S) Sun hat
All rucksacks must be lined, binbags are not to be used for this purpose.”
Equipment such as bags and jackets must be suitable for hillwalking and should not be ‘fashion’ pieces as they are not designed to meet the requirements of outdoor activity.
In addition to the above, I would recommend that students bring a roll of toilet paper in case it is required.
