Pawemi St. Benedict’s!!

Well that’s me all alone after escorting the group to the airport on Sat evening.  I spent the night in a hotel in Lilongwe with Fr. Daniel and Fr. Andrew.  We left early on Sunday morning to attend the funeral of Fr. Daniel’s uncle in a remote village.  Bizarrely I was a guest of honour and had to sit on the sanctuary with the priests and then in the front of the hearse – quite an experience!

Even a funeral in Malawi is full of singing and dancing.  There was a hatch on the coffin which was opened to reveal the deceased’s face and all the women processed round the coffin wailing.  After 4 and a half hours of the ceremony and burial we were back on the road to my former home Mzuzu.

As much as I miss the group it felt good to back in my old bedroom and amongst people I’ve become very close to over the past 11 years.  I’m now back into the old routine of 6:30am Mass and I’m really looking forward to meeting up with all my old friends over the next few days.

You will be glad to know that the group all arrived home safe and well – although I think with a very different outlook on life.  It was a tremendous experience for me, being able to share my love of the Malawian people and culture with such a fantastic group.

  3. Thank you for organising this incredible experience and thank you to everyone in Malawi who looked after our children and made them feel so welcome. The stories of their adventures are incredible.

Good luck on the remainder of your trip.

  4. Bernadette,
Glad that everything went well with the trip. You certainly sounded as though you were all having a very special time.
Thinking of you as you spend the next few weeks in Malawi…both in Rhumpi and in Mzuzu.
Give our love to all…particularly Father Chunda and all of the priests at St. Dennis’s and everyone in Mzuzu. With you in spirit at the 6.30 Masses, PTC, Mayoka, downtown Mzuzu etc etc
    Take good care!
    Paul, Anne and Celia

  5. Saint Bernadette,
Just wanted to give a massive thanks for everything you have done for us over the past year in preparation and most importantly during the Malawi trip. It has been a great learning experience and none of it would have been possible without you!
