Hearty Lives Update May 2016

There have been many Hearty Lives developments since the last update.  And as we move towards the end of year 3 plans are being put in place to ensure the sustainability of the project.

Hearty Lives Youth Committee

The Hearty Lives Youth Committee was set up on January with the purpose of shaping the future of the Hearty Lives Programme.  As a start, the group committed to leading activities to promote non smoking day on 16th March.  The pupils delivered a workshop to lower school assemblies and at an NHS event held at Johnstone Town Hall.  The group were later awarded runners up in the No Smoking Day Best Education Category.

St Benedict's raised £597.14 for the British Heart Foundation in February.  Pupils and staff joined in the "Wear It Beat It" campaign and bought red roses for Valentine's day.  The donation was gratefully received by the charity which has funded the Hearty Lives Project for the past 3 years.

Health Issues in the Community

The S5/S6 Sports Leader Group recently completed a short course entitled "Health Issues in the Community".  This new course which has come about through the Hearty Lives Project involved the pupils in learning about and discussing issues on their doorstep and how communities can become empowered to address some of the issues and barriers they face.

Healthy Heroes Club

The Healthy Heroes club continues to run on a Monday lunchtime offering activities to pupils in S1-S3.  This term we have had sessions involving football, badminton, assault course and basketball.  There has also been fruit and vegetable tasting in the street area at lunchtime to encourage pupils to make healthy dietary choices and try some food they may never have tasted.

Two Young Leaders have taken their role to the next level and now organise an activity club for S1 and S2 on Friday lunchtimes.

Linwood Parkour

Linwood Parkour continues to run in St Benedict's gym hall on a Tuesday evening.  This club is for young people aged 11-18 (or p7 and above) who live in Renfrewshire. Participants can join one of 2 sessions which run between  6-7pm and 7-8pm.

The cost is £2.50 per session and it is suitable for complete beginners. Places are strictly limited and must be booked in advance by contacting Active Communities on: or 0141 258 9923

New Young Leaders

A group of 18 S3 pupils who volunteered to become Hearty Lives Young Leaders have now completed a training day in preparation for their leadership roles during the P7 induction days in June.  This was a very successful, informative and inspiring day.

Celebration Event

A celebration of the Hearty Lives Renfrewshire Project will take place on 8th June at Tweedie Hall in Linwood.  British Heart Foundation Representatives, Project staff from Active Communities, school staff and young people who have been involved in the project will attend the event which will celebrate the achievements and advancements made over the past 3 years.
